She sat there on her princess bed, reading her book about butterflies. Like any child, she had already forgotten the bird under the glass cake dome and been taken with the pretty pictures of a blue monarch.
The bird had been found outside wounded, and Isabella had thought she would bring it in. A romantic thought had crossed her mind, that she would take care of the bird and it would be her friend for as long as she could imagine.
It wasn’t until the bird chirped and squawked that Isabella remembered the bird. Excited, she ran to the bird’s side and watched. She had been good to remember to leave water and food for the bird and poor Isabella would have lifted the dome, but it was ever so heavy to carry the first time and she’d rather not do it a second. Nor did Isabella want the bird to escape into the house for her mother to see.
She was going to the fair this weekend and she didn’t want this to ruin her long awaited weekend, for her dad was going to be there, too! He had finally made time off work and nothing could ruin this weekend. She had hoped that mom and dad spending more time together might make them happy again like before.
And that’s why Isabella never lifted the lid. She pleaded to the bird to stay quiet and kissed the glass as if to say goodnight. She tried to sleep, even as the bird squawked, and after a handful of hushes, the bird had silenced. Perfectly silent for Isabella to have her perfect sleep before the weekend.
